"The Essence of Maya" is a web series that chronicles the intimate, humorous, and gritty behind-the-scenes journey of Maya Azucena's music career hustle. The series is shot in documentary style, directed and edited by Rae Maxwell. It introduces viewers to Maya's colorful world of daily characters and new encounters. It captures her performances on and off the stage, while revealing her heart for humanity.
Season 1 is based on Maya's adventures in the streets of New Orleans and appearance at the 2013 Essence Festival on a lineup that included Beyonce, Jill Scott, LL Cool J, and others.
Season 2 is based back in Brooklyn and touches on the song Maya recorded in tribute to Trayvon Martin, and #BlackLivesMatter, as well as her concert at Restoration Rocks Festival in Bed Stuy.
